The £9,000 Oil and LPG Heat Pump Grant is Live Now – But Only Until 31 March 2027
Still heating with oil or LPG? You're not alone in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
Here's the news: the higher £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for eligible off-gas-grid homes is live now. It doesn't last forever. The higher rate is available until 31 March 2027.

What's live now?
Since 21 July 2026, eligible off-gas-grid properties replacing an oil or LPG heating system can receive £9,000 towards an air source or ground source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).

Nothing to claim back later
The grant is paid to your MCS-certified installer and taken off the quoted price. You don't have to pay the full installation amount or claim the grant back later. Simple Solar is MCS-certified for heat pump installations and handles the voucher application as part of the process.
Who actually qualifies for £9,000?
It's not simply a grant for "anyone on oil". Three things have to line up together.
The property also can't be a new-build, and the other standard Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules still apply.
Why Devon, Cornwall and Somerset?
The South West has one of the highest concentrations of off-gas-grid homes in England. Many rural properties were never connected to mains gas.
Those households often face higher and less predictable heating costs than gas neighbours. Oil and LPG track global markets and sit outside the energy price cap.
Devon
Around half of residents live in rural communities that are often off the gas network, with tens of thousands of households relying on heating oil.
Cornwall
Roughly 14% of households – about 35,000 homes – are off the mains gas grid and depend on oil or LPG.
Somerset
A similar picture across rural uplands and levels.
For these homes, a properly designed air source heat pump plus the higher grant is worth a serious look before the £9,000 rate ends.

Simple Solar's air source heat pump installations start from around £12,000 before the grant.
So, for an eligible off-gas-grid home replacing oil or LPG, the final price to the customer is around £3,000, after the £9,000 grant. With the standard £7,500 grant for non oil / LPG homes, it would be around £4,500.
Many households also pair a heat pump with solar panels to cut running costs further. For certain periods of the day, your solar panels can power your heat pump, instead of drawing energy from the grid.
Why act before 31 March 2027?
Two practical reasons.
The higher rate is time-limited
The higher £9,000 rate is time-limited. After 31 March 2027, eligible oil and LPG off-grid homes are expected to fall back to the standard £7,500 tier for air-to-water and ground source heat pumps (unless policy changes again).
Installation slots take time
Autumn and winter are busy for installers. Surveys, Ofgem consent checks and installation slots take time. Leaving it to the last minute is a good way to miss the diary – and possibly the higher rate.
The application date matters. The £9,000 rate applies to eligible applications properly made on or after 21 July 2026. Ofgem will still contact you directly for consent, identity and eligibility checks even when we submit the voucher for you.
